All you ever wanted to know about Bulgaria!
Quick Country Facts:

Bulgaria is situated in Southeast Europe and occupies the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. To the north it borders on Romania to the west on the on the Republic of Macedonia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to the east on the Black Sea, to the south Greece and to the southeast on Turkey's European part.

Area: 111,000 sq. km. (slightly larger than Tennessee).

Population: 8, 428,006

Religion: 86.6% of the population are Eastern
Orthodox , and 13% are Muslim

Official Language: Bulgarian; uses Cyrillic Alphabet

Climate: Temperate continental with clearly marked four seasons

Background:
Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, and Bulgaria began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into the EU and NATO.
